learning to fly

Trial instructional flight

Your first flight is unforgettable!

A trial instructional flight lets you take the controls to experience flying firsthand. You will gain an understanding of what pilot training involves. Anyone with even the slightest interest in flying will find the experience immensely rewarding and enjoyable.

Our gift vouchers are perfect if someone you know has an interest in aviation.  Please contact us to arrange a voucher.

Recreational pilot licence (RPL)

This licence is the first step along your aviation pathway. It allows you to fly a single-engine aircraft and carry passengers within 25 nautical miles of the departure aerodrome. To achieve this licence, you must be at least 16 years old, have a minimum of 25 hours of flying experience, hold a valid medical certificate, and pass theory and flight tests.

You can add endorsements to the RPL to expand your privileges:

  • controlled aerodrome

  • controlled airspace

  • flight radio

  • navigation (this removes the 25 nm limit).

What if I already hold a pilot certificate issued by Recreational Aviation Australia (RAAus)?
Your experience counts towards the RPL.

You’ll need to complete a CASA application form and undertake a flight review.

Some RAAus endorsements may be transferred; however, for others you’ll need to do appropriate training.

Private pilot licence (PPL)

Ever dreamt of a scenic flight over Sydney Harbour with you at the controls? Or heading down to the coast for lunch on the beach? How about taking your family and friends away for a weekend? Then the private pilot licence is your next step.

This licence allows you to fly an aircraft as pilot in command for private operations. To achieve this licence, you must be 17 years old, have a minimum of 40 hours of flying experience, hold a valid medical certificate and pass theory and flight tests.

Commercial pilot licence (CPL)

Ready to fly for work? Whether you wish to become a charter or airline pilot, instructor, or agricultural pilot, the commercial pilot licence is your next step.

We offer the 200-hour flexible, part-time training course. To achieve this licence, you must be at least 18 years old, complete the theory examinations for the relevant aircraft category, meet the minimum aeronautical experience requirements and pass a flight test.

Flight reviews

Do you already hold a licence? We offer currency training and flight reviews.

We understand this can be a stressful time – but it doesn’t have to be. Our instructors will help you gain confidence during training and develop safe habits.

Recreational aviation

Recreational aviation suits pilots who want to fly for fun. This sector of aviation is controlled by Recreational Aviation Australia (RAAus) under delegation from the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA).

The sector focuses on lighter aircraft (previously known as ultralights) with a maximum of one passenger.

To begin training, you must first join RAAus.

To achieve the RAAus pilot certificate, you must complete 20 hours of flight time including 5 hours solo and pass a flight test. Then you can then fly within 25 nautical miles of your departure airport.

If you want to fly further, you can add a cross-country endorsement, after 10 hours of navigation exercises.

If you already have 20 hours experience in general aviation, then a conversion course will get you certified.

Aviation theory courses

Understanding aviation theory is essential to becoming a safe and confident pilot.

Much of the available knowledge is available for self-study; however, many people prefer our structured courses.

Recreational pilot licence theory

You need to pass this exam before gaining your recreational pilot licence (RPL). The course is run over 3 weekends, with the exam held on the last day. The course has an engaging format, with lunch and light refreshments provided.

We also run weekday courses leading into the exam if that suits you better.

Private pilot licence theory

This course generally runs over 6 weekends, and weekday courses are also available. It covers all of the topics for the CASA private pilot theory exam. We keep class sizes small to allow personal attention.

Lift-off refresher course

This is a one-day revision for licenced pilots who may not have done any theory for some time. It is easy to get complacent, but this refresher brings you up-to-date on the latest rule changes and covers weather understanding, communications, weight and balance, and performance considerations. A great option if you have a flight review coming up!

We pride ourselves on personalised service and don’t offer ‘packages’ where you feel like a number. We tailor the training to your needs.

Each lesson has a pre- and post-flight briefing, which we do not charge for. You only pay when the engine is running.
